While Wynnter and I were out practicing with the sheep yesterday at Hado-Bar, owner Judi Bigham asked me to look at her new shop. Hado-Bar is one of the most serene places I have ever been. There is a simple comfort in simply pulling into the drive. Judi and Tom have always had a small shop in a corner of the ewe barn, but recently Judi has been certified as a Master Herbalist, so she is reinventing the little shop. She will be selling holistic pet items. I picked up a pet first aid kit loaded with herbal remedies and instructions for handling pet emergencies. I also bought a bottle of Pest Defense that Judi has made and used for years for herself, her dogs and the sheep.

If interested in any of this sort of thing, Judi’s website is http://www.freewebs.com/hado-bar/about.htm. There is no information regarding her holistic endeavors at this time, but her contact information is there. Drop her an email and ask.

On Saturday, July 10, 2010, Wynnter earned her U-CDX at the UKC Premier in Richmond, IN with a score of 190 in the Open B class. This was our highest score ever! We spent four days at Premier, where Wynnter worked with Taylor in the Junior Showmanship ring. The days were hot, but they flew by – we couldn’t believe how quickly Sunday came when we were on our way home. It was really good to see our white shepherd friends along with all our friends with other breeds; we missed Premier last year. While not being thrilled with the Richmond site, we had a good time, and the obedience/agility building was the coolest place at the show – figuratively and literally!

In October, Becky and I entered the German Shepherd Dog Club of America National Herding event held at Hado Bar. It has been in our plans since Arwen and Wynnter were puppies starting out. We wanted to earn their started titles at this event, since it will probably never be so close for us again.

Arwen and Becky did earn their title from the Saturday GSD only trial with placement. I never expect less from them – they earned placements in each trial we entered, including High In Trial the week previous in the Detroit Sheltie Club trial. Wynnter and I did not qualify at that trial, so we needed another leg at the National to earn the title. Sunday was designated as the National Event, out of which the highest scoring advanced dog would become the possible Herding Victor depending upon the score of the highest scoring advanced dog from C course, which was run on Monday. To our delight, Drummer and Kelly Malone, our teacher, did earn that high score from advanced on Sunday, and after C course on Monday, Drummer was named the 2009 GSDCA Herding Victor. This is Kelly’s second HV, as Reva earned the award in 2006.

Wynnter did qualify on Sunday also, and to my complete surprise, took first place in her class, High-scoring Started Dog, High Scoring Dog with an Obedience Title, and High In Trial. Wynn’s score was one point higher than Drummer’s (which is not surprising since the started class is easier). After the events held in Springfield were completed, it was determined that I earned the Bob Vest Memorial Award for the High Scoring Novice Handler! What a thrill for me, and something I barely dared to dream about, being so new to perfomance events. This sort of thing will certainly help a beginner’s confidence though!

Labor Day weekend was a busy one at Hado Bar. The farm held it’s summer AHBA trials over four days. On Saturday they held the Herding Ranch Dog trials, and Becky and I decided to enter.

The HRD is a long course through all four of the pastures with lots of gate-work. It is a trial which shows the practical work of a dog on a working ranch. There is gathering, fetching, holding off the gate, and sorting sheep through a gate and putting them through various obstacles in addition to leaving them at a graze. The first level allows 20 minutes to complete the course. The course must be run successfully twice to earn the HRD title. There were a lot of entries, and the day that started at 7:30 AM lasted until nearly 8:00 PM!

Becky and Arwen completed the qualifying runs with a second place in the first trial, and first place in the second trial, earning her title. Wynnter qualified in the first trial with a third place, but did not qualify in the second trial. We will have to wait till spring to finish her title. Follow this link to the video of Arwen’s title leg: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nd_V3WcUT2M

Even though we had to call our second run, I am thrilled we earned a placement in the first trial. It has only been a year since I watched Luna, who is an accomplished herding dog, earn her HRD. Becky and Arwen completed the course with a grace and style I can only hope to someday achieve. I am so happy that Wynnter and I were able to compete in this sort of event. Herding is so difficult, and so many days after lessons I would simply wonder if I would ever get it. I am happy to say, it’s coming.

On June 28, Wynnter finished her UKC Companion Dog title at Montpelier, Ohio, earning a third and two second places in the Novice B class.

Taylor also showed Wynnter in conformation; this granddaughter of mine loves running in a conformation ring. And she did very well, taking a Best of Breed over one of the top-winning white shepherds in the country and surprising both of us. There is no doubt that Taylor is an excellent handler. She also took a Best of Breed with a Hemi daughter that has seldom been shown on Sunday morning. Rikki was bred by Mona Persson at Hallmark Shepherds and is owned by Cindy McCann. Taylor looks forward to showing Rikki for Cindy at future shows.

Both Taylor and I were delighted with the outcome of this weekend.

We have had four lessons now, and Wynnter seems to enjoy the opportunity to finally put her nose to the ground with permission! The most notable thing about these lessons is that it has rained on every single one! Fortunately, thanks to herding, we carry our foul weather gear with us at all times.

On March 22 & 23, junior handler Taylor and her puppy, Wyndsong Moonlight Sonata, competed at a UKC Multibreed show in Milford, Ohio. I am so proud to report that they came away from the show three quarters of the way to Lexi’s UKC championship! This is only the second time that they have competed in a conformation show.

Taylor has been taking conformation lessons at Columbus All Breed training facility since shortly after bringing her puppy home last September. She has worked diligently training her puppy to achieve such amazing results so quickly. In addition to Lexi taking several group placements, Taylor also showed in the novice junior handler class. In this her first outing, she achieved a first place with competition, which automatically moves the junior into the open class. In all, this beginning team came away from the show with sixteen ribbons! Amazing!
