Puppies are AKC registered; UKC paperwork is available. White shepherds make great pets, and these puppies have AKC and UKC performance-titled dogs throughout their pedigree. If you are looking for a partner to spend some quality time with training and trialing in agility, obedience, tracking or herding, one of these babes might be just what you are looking for. Wynnter is always ready to head out for training with me.

                                            KARMA PERFORMANCE TRAINING BLOG

Hi, my name is Kelly Malone. I am a human/canine instructor. Each week my job is to help people learn how to teach their dogs herding, obedience, agility and behavior modification.

There are bookshelves full of books out there telling you how to train your dog. “Follow this formula to a better dog.” But it didn’t work. Or, it worked for just awhile. It worked for one dog and not the other. Why didn’t it work? What do you do next?

There is lots of material out there talking about how to train the dog, but there are few to none whose purpose is to help YOU learn to be a better teacher.

I am fascinated by the subject of people finding better ways to become better teachers for their dogs. I find that Teaching and Learning are an infinite Figure 8. You teach the dog how to learn…the results push you to become a better teacher….Better teaching skills help your student achieve a higher level….better feedback and results push you to find even better answers….Better answers help you become a better teacher….

I’ve designed this blog to help people explore, understand, and embrace the idea that good teaching concepts are universal and, the foundation and framework for successful dog work—whether it’s competitive herding, obedience, agility or a well mannered housedog. My goal is for you to see that WHAT you are teaching: herding, obedience, is not as important as HOW you are teaching.

Each week this blog will discuss teaching/learning issues that have come with working with my dogs or from lessons and clinics. At the end of each post I ask: What do you think?

Please, read, ponder and respond with your own ideas to the subject under discussion. This blog’s value will come from having thinking, interactive discussions amongst the members.

If you go to my website: karmaperformance.weebly.com and go to the blog page, there will be a sample post to read.

The cost of the blog is $30 for six months. The blog’s start date is JANUARY 15th, 2012.

I hope you join us in the discussion.

On Tuesday before Wynnter’s herding lesson, Kelly introduced the puppies to sheep for the first time at Hado Bar while I made video. The pups are now eight weeks old. Sequel went first. She found a line left in the pen and thought that would be fun to play with. She was happy to follow Kelly around when that option was removed. She is a bit of an adventurer and was enjoying the new smells immensely. When she caught sight of the lambs she thought they were pretty interesting and continued to follow Kelly after them. Then the lambs turned and Sequel stopped to reconsider. Caution ruled and she moved away. Kelly took a minute to play with her and she recovered nicely to do some more following before giving them some distance again.

In the first video it is just Sequel. The second video has Genie joining her. Genie is very interested in the lambs. At the end of the second video when Kelly is calling them to the gate, Sequel just sits down as if to say, I’m not ready to quit this.

So it begins for Sequel.

Naming a puppy is the hardest thing for me. When you only have two dogs at a time, you want the name to be perfect. I agonize over it. It must be something that has great meaning to me. Something that is extremely positive; that says what I want my puppy to become.

I liked Becky’s suggestion of Saphira when I looked it up. I have never read the book Eragon, nor seen the movie. But the quotes that were attributed to the character of Saphira spoke to me. So I thought, this is good.

My grandchildren are having the worst time trying to say it, much less remember it. And I don’t like “Saphy”; it sounds too much like Sappy, and ruins the whole dignity of it in my mind. So even though we have been calling her by name, I haven’t been totally sold.

Yesterday, the word I was searching for many weeks ago finally came to light. It says what I wanted to say; it speaks to why I made this choice to begin with.

I had many discussions with Kelly regarding performance. When I got Wynn, I was so excited to get a dog that I could show in the conformation ring. She did great and earned her UKC Grand Championship by sixteen months. But while I was doing this, I saw obedience and it blew me away. I decided I wanted to do that, along with herding. I didn’t really think the herding would pan out, but I loved spending time at the farm with the other white shepherd people. It felt like a community.

But now, I am obsessed with performance. I have learned so much in the last six years, and continue to learn more every day. Wynnter has earned so many titles, and I love that. We have dabbled in almost everything. When you reach the higher levels of performance, you really see the dog communicate, whether it is confusion or confidence or something in between. You begin to feel the partnership that has built with each achievement, or the struggles of trying to reach a goal. For me it builds the desire to continue further.

Now there is the opportunity to take what I have learned from Wynnter and build a relationship with another dog. For me, part of this journey extends to the breeders of my dogs. I have felt that Wynnter’s successes reflect upon her breeder. The same will certainly be true with Kelly; no, even moreso as she is also my trainer. As a breeder, you try to improve upon the dog you have; you are working on a vision in your mind of the finished product. Your passion for what you do dictates how you proceed. This litter of pups is to be a continuation of Kelly’s successes in the herding ring primarily. These pups have her beloved Reva as their great grandmother; and Legend as their dad. This litter is immensely important to Kelly.

As a trainer and handler, I want to be a partner with my breeder in the fulfillment of that vision. So my puppy’s name is the essense of that idea. Her name will be Sequel.

My greatest wish with this puppy is creating a new chapter for the line that is Karma. Our journey begins in two weeks. She is a beauty.

I have gone to the dark side! My new performance partner is almost four weeks old. Taylor and I went to her breeder’s for a visit yesterday. I have decided to call her Saphira for the heroine from the movie Eragon (thank you Becky Joyce for the idea). This pup has some serious names in her pedigree. Bred by Kelly Malone, Saphira’s great granddam is Reva, 2006 Herding Victress, and her half brother is Drummer, 2009 Herding Victor. There are many champions of record beginning with her sire, Legend, and going back a few more generations there is the great Dallas.

I think most important to me is her dam, Rissa. Rissa’s performance career is just beginning, but it is her nature that is just to die for. She is beautiful and one of the sweetest dogs I know. Wynnter loves to play with her, but Rissa knows when it’s time to go to work. There are several videos of her training on my You Tube channel, wynnter2006.

I am really looking forward to starting our journey together with training skills I did not have when Wynnter was a pup.

I was a bit worried that I might not have had it right, but today UKC’s website made it official. Wynnter earned her first agility title the first weekend of this month in Montpelier at the Northwest Ohio Dog Obedience Club agility trials. We had earned the first leg at their July trials, and finished the title on October 1st. This being our first agility experience I was quite pleased with our performance. It is an outside trial with gating consisting of roping with flags which were flapping madly in the windy conditions. Wynnter was challenged by this distraction, along with harness horses being worked on the nearby track and dogs running in adjoining rings. She stayed on task nicely, while several dogs left the ring. Our speed is not great, but she is careful and loves the contact obstacles. The A frame is definitely her favorite.

Two weeks after, we went to our first AKC agility trials at the Soccerplex in North Olmsted. I really learned a lot there. I entered both JWW and Standard, and then realized our classes were first thing in the morning and last of the day respectively. So, considering we would be there all day anyway, I volunteered to work. No better way to learn what is going on than to move jump bars and run score sheets. The three days were exhausting, but I had a great time, and learned just how hard agility truly is. I watched some of the most graceful handlers I have ever seen in anything, and how truly amazing they were as a team with their dogs.

Jumping is not Wynn’s favorite thing to do; it just doesn’t amp her up like it does some dogs. One knocked bar in agility and you are done. She did that in one trial. There were run-outs in several, probably because I am not fast enough for her. But at the very end of the weekend, in the last class of the weekend, we qualified. We had a perfect clean run of 100, and won first place. Video is here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PaELYTpQ0Fo

What a high! Our instructor, Laurie Loeffler with Canine Sports in Vermilion is great and is helping us work on getting some more speed. We should have some time to improve that since AKC trials are incredibly difficult to get into. The first one I entered in August, having my entry arrive at the trial secretary’s the day after it opened, was 200 on the wait list! I don’t know how many I may be able to get to during the winter, so it may be spring before we can do this again. Toledo and Cleveland are definitely the closest trials, and they fill immediately. We will keep working in the meantime.
